A friend of mine told me this story, about a funny yet shockingly incident involving his friend’s granny in Australia. Well, it happened when his friend’s family was escorting him to the University of Melbourne to continue his study in Medic. And his granny was there too. His granny was from Kelantan, purely Kelantan.
After they had done with the “delivery” stuff at Melbourne, they were planning on taking a tour around there. They had a lot of fun including the granny. On the way back to the Melbourne, they took a train. And at that moment, when a lot of people were rushing going in and out of the train, the granny couldn’t find any empty chair to sit on.
She thought that everyone else would give her their sit for her sake. Well, you know, for the old woman like her right? But unfortunately no one did that. Maybe the differences of cultures perhaps? Suddenly, she saw one single empty sit. She was rushing walking to the empty sit, (how fast old woman walk?) but unfortunately again, that sit was taken by a tall man; of course he was a local citizen around there. She was very pissed off.
“Menate beruk putih nie, aku nok duduk pun tok se?” she said in her Kelantan accent. There were a lot of repulsive things she said to that man and I can't remember all of them, sorry guys. And that man, just kept ignoring her like she wasn’t there. This white monkey couldn’t understand what I’m saying, the granny thought.
After a few terminals, that man finally stands on his feet. And the granny was blocking his way to get out of the train. He took a deep breath and then he said, “Tumpang lalu, beruk putih nak lalu”.
“…” the granny was in great shock as she was speechless at that moment.
p/s: even a foreigner knew our mother tongue. ouch.
